SURAT: Arun Jariwala, chairman of the Federation of Indian Art Silk Weaving Industry (FIASWI) will now represent the textile hub of Surat in the All India Powerloom Board (AIPB). The textiles ministry has appointed Jariwala as the non-official member of AIPB. He is among the select 12 non-official members from different textile centres across India and will serve a two-year term period.

After a gap of six years, Surat has got a representation in AIPB. Jariwala's appointment in AIPB is being seen as an important development. His long association with the textile sector along with his broad experience in the art silk weaving industry is expected to offer key inputs to AIPB, and help in formulating development schemes for the powerloom sector.

Recently, FIASWI has submitted a suggestion to the textiles ministry, urging for establishing Surat as a mega powerloom cluster for non-cotton filament fabrics in the draft National Fibre Policy (NFP). Jariwala said, “In the latest submission to the textile ministry, we have demanded that Surat should be developed as the mega powerloom cluster. There are immense opportunities for the Surat cluster in the field of technical textiles. Being a member of IAPB, I will strive to achieve desire results for the development of the powerloom sector."
