35 dyeing units sealed for polluting water bodies in Tamil Nadu

Erode (Tamil Nadu): Thirty five dyeing units here have been sealed for allegedly discharging untreated effluents in into Cauvery river and a key irrigation canal.

The action was taken under the Pollution Control Act following a joint raid by Revenue officials and Pollution Control Board personnel last evening based on complaints from farmers of the region, officials said today.


The officials led by Erode revenue divisional officer Benjamin Babu during the raids in Kollampalayam, Surampatty, Choolai and Narayanavalasu found 35 dyeing units discharging effluents into drains which enters the Kalingarayan Canal, a major irrigation channel for the district, and Cauvery river, they said.


One of the units had been sealed in 2009 but was found operating with generators and oil engines.


The officials warned that such raids would be continue in future.


Farmers and local people have been raising the issue of pollution of the water bodies by the dyeing and textile units dotting the Erode region.
