Sumbe - Angola's Agriculture, Rural Development and Fishing minister, Pedro Canga, on Thursday here considered cotton production at Gangula commune as an integrated project, taking as reference the social gains it will bring to over 1,000 families, ANGOP has learnt.
The minister that visited for the first time the cotton project, considered as important the integration of peasant families in the project, as beneficiaries of the irrigated lands and the social component, mainly the reclassification of the villages, under a project for rural areas.
"We will in this phase offer social equipment, health centres, schools, jobs at the fruits coring factory that is under construction, drinkable water supply and other non-agricultural activities that makes this unit an integrated project", the minister announced.
Worth about 30.0 million dollars, the project will guarantee jobs for 1,914 peasant families. It has 3,187 hectares of land for cotton production, out of its 5,000 in general.
The latest production was estimated at 500 tons of cotton, in 1999/2000 agricultural season.
