One for the textile industry

A team of researchers at the National Chemical Laboratory (NCL) in Pune has developed a titanium-based gel that can be used as an adsorbent in waste water treatment and is at least 50 times cheaper than the adsorbents available in the market.

The team was recently awarded for its technology at the India Innovation Growth Programme (IIGP) Awards organised jointly by the Federation of Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industries (FICCI) and DST Lockheed Martin.

Conceived last year by Dr Mohan Dongare, a scientist at the Catalysis Division of NCL, and three other scientists, the gel, which is not soluble in water and settles down when added to it, can be used for separation and degradation of contaminants in effluents discharged by dye and ink manufacturing industries. With the gel adsorbent, such highly-coloured contaminants can be separated and decomposed in the presence of sunlight, so that the gel can be reused several times.
