ERODE: The Perundurai SIPCOT Textile Processors Association has urged the State Government to take immediate steps for the implementation of the marine discharge project, which will enable the textile processors in Kongu region to transport and discharge the treated effluents in the sea safely.
The knitwear industry in Tirupur is largely dependent on the textile processing industries located in places like Perundurai, Erode, Bhavani and Komarapalayam.
One of the major problems faced by the textile processors in the region is the safe discharge of treated effluents. Marine discharge was conceived as a lasting solution to the problem.
Stating that the marine discharge project is technically and economically feasible, the association said that the 13th Finance Commission had already allotted Rs. 200 crore to the State Government for the project.
A majority of the textile processors in the region have already established treatment plants.
Hence, the one-time grant of Rs. 200 announced in the Union Budget recently and the State Government grant of Rs. 120 crore for the establishment of common effluent treatment plants could also be spent for the implementation of the project. The remaining funds required for the project could be obtained as loan, the association suggested.
“The textile processing industries are willing to repay the capital and interest for the loan and bear the running and maintenance cost of the project.
The implementation of the project will help protect the environment and promote the textile industry in the region,” association president P.K.N. Chandrasekaran said.
The association submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister in this regard.
