Govt says eyeing 7 pc share in USD 620 bn global textile mkt

New Delhi, Mar 4 The government has set a target to achieve 7 per cent share in the global textiles and clothing market by 2011-12, Parliament was informed today.

"The government has been pursuing various short term, medium term and long term measures by way of export incentives, under the Foreign Trade Policy, reduction of transaction costs and input costs, enhanced banking and monetary support for the textile sector," Minister of State for Textiles Panabaaka Lakshmi said in a written reply to the Lok Sabha today.

According to official estimates, in the USD 620 billion global textiles and clothing industry, India&aposs share was about four per cent in 2008-09.

Replying to another query in the Lok Sabha, she said,"The Cotton Corporation of India (CCI) plans to open cotton sales depot at Baddi ( Himachal Pradesh) and Ludhiana (Punjab)."

CCI has opened cotton sales depots at Coimbatore and Rajapalayam ( Tamil Nadu) in February 2010.

The 62-billion Indian textiles sector is the second largest employment generator after agriculture, employing 3.5 crore people
